January 1 was not always the New Year. Early Romans began their year in March. Later, Roman officials moved the start to January 1 for practical reasons. Julius Caesar kept this date. After Rome fell, Christian Europe shifted the New Year to religious dates. Pope Gregory XIII reintroduced January 1 in 1582.
