A recent survey has recorded 270 dugongs along the Tamil Nadu coastline, marking India’s largest remaining viable population of the endangered marine mammal. This success is attributed to dedicated conservation efforts and community involvement, establishing Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar as crucial refuges for these gentle sea cows.
